Did you know that there are several resources available to keep you up-to-date on safety and health training in Ontario? As a union member, it is essential to keep up with training so you are safe while on the job. We’d like to list several resources for you here and of course, encourage you to ask questions or let us know if you need any assistance scheduling a course in your trade of expertise.
As you may already know, IUPAT works closely with the Ontario Industrial and Finishing Skills Centre. Here, members are able to receive a ticket in any area that is required by the Ontario Ministry of Labour. This may include, but is not limited to WHMIS, Fall Prevention and First Aid. Additionally, there are specific health and safety training courses that are related to the painting and glaziers trades. For example, glaziers commonly require training on how to safely operate a power elevated work platform while an industrial painter may need training on confined space entry and rescue.
A course schedule is distributed to all union members at the beginning of each year; and, if there is sufficient demand additional courses can also be arranged, you can contact your Union Representative for assistance or you can always contact the OIFSC directly at 416-635-7300. Their training centres are located in Toronto (right behind our building), in Ancaster and also Ottawa.
Something else to note, as the publishing of this article, OIFSC is currently working on accrediting it’s trainers to teach the new Working at Heights course that will be soon mandated by the Ministry of Labour.
Another organization with whom we partner is the Interior Finishing Systems Training Centre (IFSTC). They provide safety and healthy training courses for drywall finishers, stucco mechanics and hazardous materials workers throughout Ontario. Their facilities in Toronto, Woodbridge and Ottawa can help you transition from being an apprentice to a journeyperson, learn more about your specific trade or even those required healthy and safety classes.
To apply for classes or to review a course schedule, feel free to visit their website at http://www.ifstc.com/. Their website also offers videos and information in several languages.
Here at the IUPAT in Ontario, we’re dedicated to ensuring that you have access to the necessary safety and health training courses that will further continued success in your trade. Should you have any questions regarding classes, course schedules or upcoming requirements, please reach out to your Union Representative or feel free to contact our office at 1-800-668-1823.
