It’s a well-established fact that workers who are part of unions are paid more and receive better wages than those that are not supported by unions. This is one of the reasons that so many young people and more seasoned individuals who want to switch industries are interested in career training as painters, glaziers, drywall finishers and more. After all, education is the keystone to systematically advancing in a field.

How Career Training in a Trade Works

Unlike other types of industries, certain tradespeople, such as glaziers, go through a very specific type of career training path. Rather than going to a school that includes lectures and classroom activities, they learn on the job. Usually, this is deemed as an apprenticeship.

The value of the apprenticeship system of career training has been consistently noted:

  • It allows new persons involved in the trade to learn from those who have been doing work for a long time. Thus, good behaviors and practices are passed down from one worker to another.
  • It allows for questions to be asked during real-time situations. Rather than “what if” scenarios, apprentices can make inquiries when a job is happening. This fosters a greater retention of what to do in various circumstances.
  • It allows the apprentice to determine if this is truly the line of work for him or her. What better way is there to find out if a career in a certain trade is ideal than to do that work day-in, day-out for a period?
  • It allows for an apprentice to be paid just like an employee, which means money can be earned while training occurs.
  • It provides a unique relationship between the worker and his or her mentor(s). This mentoring can last well beyond the apprenticeship time period.
  • If the apprenticeship is performed through a certified organization such as the IUPAT in Toronto, Ontario, the apprentice can be ensured of being partnered with a strong union.
  • It helps apprentices get on the fast track to finding out when jobs are available in their area. This promotes higher-than-average employment rates.
