The raiding period for 2013 is upon us and we want you to be prepared if you are approached by another Union. Typically, the raiding period doesn’t begin until February 1st, but we know that some Unions will begin this process prior to that date. Visit our page about Union Raiding for more details. I was doing some research on arbitration and found some interesting history that I thought I would share with you. Did you know that arbitration dates back as far as King Solomon who used it during the Greco-Roman period? Also, there is evidence that it was used in the United States beginning with their first President for disputes that happened over his estates. I think it’s very interesting that this process has been used over so many years by so many different groups of people to come to a mutual resolution that is beneficial for both parties involved.
Are you a high school student who is not quite sure what they want to do after high school is over? If you are not a fan of sitting behind a desk all day during college classes or even at a job, we encourage you to consider pursuing a career in a Finishing Trade. To get union jobs, all you need is a high school diploma or GED to get started.
Joseph Russo, an 18 year member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) in Ontario, was recently elected as the new Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer of District Council 46 as well as President of the Ontario Painters Council. In his new role, Mr. Russo will guide the organizations in recruiting of new Union members, creating a strong foundation for solidarity and providing a significant support for political activism for rights of Union members. Russo replaces long time Business Manager Wm. (Bill) Nicholls who resigned from his positions in July 2012.
TORONTO, ONTARIO, SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 — Bill Nicholls, the current Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer of IUPAT District Council 46 and President of the Ontario Council of Painters, has accepted a new position as the Special Assistant to the IUPAT General President, James Williams. In his new role, Nicholls will be advising District Councils across the US and Canada and taking on other leadership responsibilities as deemed by Williams.
The IUPAT in Ontario has a rich and productive history as an active Union in both Canada and the United States. Our roots dig way back to the late 1800’s where we began as The Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators of America.
Join us in participating in our Labour Day walk on Monday, September 3, 2012! Labour Day in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday of September. It originally gave workers the chance to campaign for better working conditions or pay. Traditionally, Labour Day was an occasion to campaign for and celebrate workers’ rights during parades and picnics organized by trade unions. This day now is part of a long weekend for many Canadians.
