Whether you are looking for a career change or starting your first career, the number of options can be overwhelming. Even if you are just looking in skilled trades in Ontario, where do you start? A career as a residential painter might be exactly what you’re looking for, and IUPAT can help you join this amazing field of work.
Before you jump in with 2 feet, it’s a great idea to learn more about the trade! We have a variety of articles and information on the IUPAT website that you can review to learn more about being a residential painter. You can also call us directly with any questions.
If you can connect directly with someone in the field, offer to take them out for a coffee and ask them about their experiences, their day-to-day work, or anything else that you’re curious about. Learning more about the career before you invest in training can help you feel confident in your decision to start a career as a residential painter.
Like many skilled trades, choosing to start a career as a residential painter will allow you to “earn while you learn,” meaning that you will be making money while you are completing your apprenticeship. Training to become a residential painter still requires you to complete in-class material and there are tuition costs that come along with that. But the opportunity to be paid while you are working as an apprentice can make it less of a financial burden to pursue this career. Apprenticeship also offers the opportunity to work alongside a professional with years of experience, meaning that you will get practical and varied experience right away. IUPAT also offers continuing education opportunities for residential painters to learn about the newest techniques, tools, and technology, so you can continue to build skills after your training is completed.
Understanding your rights on a job site and as an employee is really important. IUPAT is here to help you if you experience something that isn’t right, but you need to know what to look out for. Union members before you have fought for the rights outlined in the Employment Standards Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and we want to make sure that all residential painters know what they should be expecting on a job site. You can review either of those documents online, or reach out to IUPAT directly for more information. We also operate a 24hr tip line where members can call in to report violations.
IUPAT is happy to help you with any questions that you have, whether it’s about the types of work you might be doing, the training requirements, or the benefits of being a union member. Please call us at 416-630-9604 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know when you want to start a career as a residential painter. We’re excited for you to join us!
