Sedation Dentistry Eases Appointments for Younger and Older Patients
Are you one of the estimated millions of people who has a fear of going to the dentist? It’s a common concern that we hear at the Dental Centre located next to the IUPAT office. Many patients are very nervous, some to the point that they make appointments and but can’t bring themselves to walk through the door. If this describes you, it’s time to find out about sedation dentistry.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry, helps patients with a fear of the dentist relax during routine examinations, general cleanings, deep cleanings and other dental procedures. At the facility, they offer oral sedation and nitrous oxide.
Oral sedation involves taking pharmaceuticals before your exam begins. When you arrive at the office, they will give you sedatives. After a few minutes, it will calm your nerves, allowing you to comfortably see the hygienist and dentist. Because these drugs are administered under the care of professionals, they are very safe. However, you will need a ride home, or need to take public transportation.
Nitrous oxide was once referred to as “laughing gas”. It is breathed in and takes immediate effect. Although it probably won’t make you laugh, it will take away your worries about your dental visit. Nitrous oxide is used frequently with adults and children, and is considered very safe. You should not need someone to drive you after having nitrous oxide as a form of sedation dentistry, because the nitrous oxide wears off almost immediately.
What Are the Benefits to Sedation Dentistry?
There are numerous advantages to sedation dentistry for you and your family members with dental concerns:
- You will finally be able to get the care you need without worrying that you will have panic attacks or anxiety while at the dentist’s office.
- You will have a painless experience every time you come to the dentist, even if you require a surgical procedure like oral surgery or extractions. Even if you have a low pain tolerance, you will not feel any sensations thanks to sedation dentistry mixed with numbing agents like topical gels.
- You can find out if your teeth and gums are healthy. Many people do not realize that they are at risk of developing gum disease, or that they already have a case of gingivitis, until a dentist alerts them to the problem.
- You will be examined for signs of oral cancer, which is highly treatable in its earliest stages.
- You will become a positive role model for your children, who will see going to the dentist as important and valuable.
