IUPAT Ontario and IFSTC Partner for Drywall Trade Apprenticeship Programs 01/19/2010

The Ontario Council of Painters (OCP) of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) is excited to announce drywall trade apprenticeship training opportunities that allow union and non-union members alike the ability to receive certification in the industry. IUPAT Ontario has worked to forge a partnership with the Interior Finishing Systems Training Centre (IFSTC) in order to give students, trades people, contractors and other individual’s access to the hands-on experience and knowledge they need to begin working in a dynamic trade.

IUPAT Ontario currently represents two fields of the drywall trade: Drywall Finishers and Plasterers
and Exterior Insulated Finishing System (EIFS). These two areas represent IUPAT’s most recent work in providing existing union members, contractors and other individuals with drywall training in Ontario. IUPAT Ontario and the IFSTC’s drywall trade apprenticeship training is available to those with career experience ranging from Primary (1-2 years), to Advanced, and Journey levels. The drywall training program is made available through a not for profit (NPO) organization and requires a $400 registration fee (paid to the government).

Individuals are eligible to begin working to become Drywall Finishers and Plasterers if they are at least sixteen years old and hold proof of a Grade 10 Math and English education in Canada (or a proven equivalency transcript). The Drywall Finishers and Plasterers apprenticeship program requires participants to pass an aptitude test that stresses math and communication skills. This test can be taken as many times as necessary (at four month intervals) before potential students move forward with interviews and possible acceptance to drywall trade apprenticeship training.

The Exterior Insulated Finishing System (EIFS) Mechanics drywall training program is open to those that meet the same age and education requirements as listed above (it also requires potential students to pass an aptitude test). The IFSTC drywall trade apprenticeship training program requires EIFS Mechanics students to complete the in-school training course and 5,400 hours of work experience. Graduates of the program must also successfully complete and pass the Certificate of Qualification examination through the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities.

The average age of those that completedthe drywall trade apprenticeship program training was 25 to 30,Finishers being 34 to 39, and EIFS graduates being 34 to 39.

IUPAT was chartered in March 1971. The IUPAT Ontario Council iscomprised of 14 Local Unions. It’s most recent work in drywall trainingprograms allows union and non-union members both to gain access to aneducation that sees graduates enjoying a 100% placement rate in athriving trade.
