Health Plans and Health Care Benefits for Union Workers

Union workers are more likely than their nonunion counterparts to have better benefits and better coverage in their health care benefits and dental plans. According to Statistics Canada, “83% of unionized employees are covered by either a pension plan or group plan compared to just 33% of non-union workers.” The organization also mentions that union workers also have better paid vacation leave than their non-unionized counterparts. As far as Union health plans, studies show that being in a union also benefits members because they are able to positively contribute in health and safety decisions at their place of employment.

International Union of Painters and Allied Trades offers a comprehensive health plan for its Ontario union members and their families including dental, vision and supplemental health care benefits. We’re pleased to offer these insurance programs to over 8,000 members through an independent administrator and trustees who are signatory employers and union representatives. Premiums are paid by contributions from employers through the collective bargaining agreements. More information on benefits packaging can be found at IUPAT offices in Toronto.

ONTARIO IUPAT MEMBERS VOTE ON BENEFITS

IUPAT members in Ontario have voted 92% in favour of transferring $0.40 per hour from their wages to the Health and Welfare plan to maintain their existing benefits. All locals have voted and ballots have been counted to have the transfer wages effective February 1, 2012. The members employed under EPSCA will have this change effective May 1, 2012 according to their collective bargaining agreement.

It is expected the employer associations will also approve the amendment to the respective collective bargaining agreements.

Thanks to all of the members that participated in this vote at their local union meetings.

For more information on IUPAT’s health plans, please call 1-888-863-2278.
